It’s amazing to consider the storms and violent disturbances the church has withstood. That’s why John Fox, in Fox’s Book of Martyrs has recorded these past events so that God’s wonderful works through his church may be made known for his honor’s sake. Fox’s hope also is that this history would contribute to a greater knowledge and experience of the church so that readers would benefit from an uplifting of their Christian faith.

When one recollects that until the appearance of the Pilgrim’s Progress the common people had almost no other reading matter except the Bible and Fox’s Book of Martyrs, we can understand the deep impression that this book produced; and how it served to mould the national character.
